Pingo, Dempster Highway, Northwest Territories

The term “pingo” means conical hill in the Inuvialuktun language. Pingos are only found in areas of permafrost. The Tuktoyaktuk peninsula area has the greatest concentration of pingos in the world with a total of 1,350 pingos. (Wikipedia) They form when water accumulates underground and then freezes. The freezing water expands and due to the permafrost the expansion pressure can only go upwards. Regardless of this somewhat crude and shortened explanation: they look beautiful in this bare landscape.
